Ant's brief reviews, with spoilers, on Star Trek movie...

This morning (10:25 AM PDT -- to beat the crowd and get mantinee $7.50 price), I finally saw J.J. Abrams's Star Trek movie this morning with one of my old buddies. This movie had high ratings from the Internet, so I was hoping it was good since I enjoyed Star Trek and J.J.'s television/TV series (e.g., Alias [he used the red ball again!], Lost; I didn't see his favorite box references though :D). We saw it in a different and new (1-2 years old) movie theater with digital screens (Digital Light Processing) nearby: Krikorian Pico Rivera Village Walk 15 which wasn't bad and will go back there for future movies for digital screens as the closest place (over 10 miles). Non-THX certified speakers and seats were nice. Not too many people there for now even in the afternoon hours on a Memorial Day.

As for the movie's visual, sheesh. Very colorful, flashy, crazy special effects, detailed, etc. Lots of shaky scenes but not enough to make you throw up like in Saving Private Ryan movie. Audio was good too even on standard speaker setups. It was nice to hear the old school sound effects like doors, phasers, computer voices, music (especially during the closing credits), Leonard's saying the famous Star Trek exploration line was nice, etc. Hearing I mainly only cared for visual for this flick hence the digital screen.

Plot was OK because it is another timeline (tired of that :P)! I had a hard time getting used to the new actors, especially Zachary Quinto who was going to slice people's heads off and steal special powers, since I grew up with the old original series actors. Of course, Leonard Nimoy was there to help to get the movie going and to bring in viewers. I did not expect him to have a big and long role which surprised me. I did know he was in there, but expected a small cameo. He was actually part of the timeline story (duh duh duh). Spock and Uhura make love? Ugh.

The movie had its humor here and there. I still enjoyed the movie, but I was expecting a lot more. It is not the best one though because of the timeline plot and as a reboot. Hopefully, the sequel will be better and I would get used to it. 6/10 rating for me. At least it was better than that sucky Terminator: Salvation movie (review).

Note: Review is subjected to be updated.
