46 Optical Illusions & Visual Phenomena (Visual Illusions)

| | |

Michael Bach has 46 Optical Illusions & Visual Phenomena (Visual Illusions/Optische Täuschungen). Each Web page demonstrates visual phenomena, called "optical illusions" or "visual illusions". They are relative novelty and interactivity. He also does the explainations, to the degree that these phenomena are really understood.

"Optical illusion" sounds pejorative, as if exposing a malfunction of the visual system. Rather, the author views these phenomena as bringing out particular good adaptations of our visual system to standard viewing situations. These adaptations are "hard-wired" into our brains, thus under some artificial manipulations they cause inappropriate interpretations of the visual scene. Or, as Purkinje put it (according to Teuber, 1960): "Illusions of the senses tell us the truth about perception".

Google - Not So "Safe" Image Search?

| | | |

According to this BroadbandReports/DSLReports ' forum thread, people are talking about how Google's image search isn't filtering bad contents with safe search enabled. It seems like Safe Search feature isn't doing its job very well lately, even though they don't expect it to be 100% perfect. It wasn't like this in the past when I used many times. This is bad for children who shouldn't be looking at bad images.

I searched "ants" and got a black and white photograph of a naked woman in the third image! DOH! Google's image search filtering wasn't like this in the past when I used it many times.

| | | |

Short Fuze and Machinima.com produced and released a five minutes movie based on James Bond movies and Battlefield 1942 game. It is titled "James Bond: No License" that has an action sequence, unashamedly inspired by the opening sequences of James Bond movies. It was designed to show that machinema footage can achieve the quality required for standalone video.

Repeat Pilot of The Lost airs tonight as two hours on ABC.

| |

ABC will be reshowing the pilot episode of The Lost tonight at 8:00 PM for two hours. If you haven't seen it, be sure to watch it if you want suspense, adventure, action, a few cute women (in binikis!), etc. It's a very good TV show series by J.J. Abrams, the creator of my current favorite TV spy show Alias.

Ulic and I agree this is a good show. Thanks to Spaceman Spiff to tell me about it, and he still hasn't seen it!

8088 Corruption (Final Release) Demo for DOS (DOSBox supported)

| |

According to this newsgroup thread and thread, 8088 Corruption (Final Release) demo was Jim Leonard's entry that won in a programming contest, Pilgrimage 2004 Wild Compo. The goal was to produce something "impressive" on an original IBM PC. It was a 9K program file with a 9MB data file that plays a 2-minute-long video, 30 frames per second, full-screen, in 16 colors, with FM-radio-quality audio, on nothing more than a regular IBM PC with a hard drive and Sound Blaster 2.0 or Pro card (requires 2.0 or Pro because the original old 1.0 and 1.5 cards don't support auto-init DMA).

He presented it on his IBM Model 5150 (rev "B") with 640KB total RAM, MS-DOS 6.22, Seagate ST-225 MFM 20MB drive, and Sound Blaster Pro set to IRQ 2, DMA 1, port 220h. All five slots were filled: Sound Blaster, CGA card, AST SixPackPlus (RAM and port expansion), Floppy
controller, and MFM HD controller. That's it -- no DRAM refresh tricks, no NEC V20, no upping the clock, no mathco -- just a stock PC.

Escher for Real

Escher for Real: Nevertheless, it may come as a surprise for some, but many of the so-called 'impossible' drawings of M.C. Escher can be realized as actual physical objects. These objects will resemble the Escher's drawing, of the same name, from a certain viewing direction. This work below presents some of these three-dimensional models that were designed and built using geometric modeling and computer graphics tools.

The Lord of the Ring Trilogy With Special Extended DVD Editions = 12/14/2004

| |

From The Digital Bits for 9/28/2004:

"We certainly expected this... New Line has announced that the 4-disc Special Extended DVD Editions of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King will all be available in a single box set on 12/14 (SRP $119.97). So if you haven't gotten them yet, here's the perfect chance. Basically, the three separate 4-disc sets will be packaged together in a new outer slipcase. There's nothing new in this release - no exclusive bonus discs or anything. This is just a way to sell all the Extended Editions in one package for those who may wish to purchase them that way."
