Man Uses Faux Police Car to Slow Drivers

| |

This Yahoo! News story is both amusing and radical. Rick Pyburn was sick and tired of lead-footed motorists speeding past his home. Already, he had lost five chickens to hit-and-run drivers passing by at speeds well above posted limits. Benton County Sheriff's Office was under limited budget and couldn't help Rick. He got an idea after watching a sheriff's car cruise by his house. With the help of a local sign company, Rick built the front half of a two-dimensional plywood Benton County sheriff's car, and set up the decoy in some bushes near the road, in plain view of oncoming drivers. "Once I placed that on the highway, it was amazing," he said. "The traffic immediately slowed down."...

Obesity Raising Airline Fuel Costs

| | |

According to Yahoo! News' story, airlines increasingly have to worry more about the weight of their passengers according to a new federal government study. America's growing waistlines are hurting the bottom lines of airline companies as the extra pounds on passengers are causing a drag on planes. Heavier fliers have created heftier fuel costs.

Through the 1990s, the average weight of Americans increased by 10 pounds, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (news - web sites). The extra weight caused airlines to spend $275 million to burn 350 million more gallons of fuel in 2000 just to carry the additional weight of Americans, the federal agency estimated in a recent issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Parched China figures out how to wash an entire car with 0.3 liter of water

| |

Yahoo! News has an article on how China developed a method to wash an entire car with just 0.3 liter of water. It was aimed at solving the problem of an economy that combines booming auto sales with severe water shortage, state media said.

The new method, which uses about 1,000 times less water than the traditional bucket-and-broom procedure, requires the car to be only slightly moisturized and then sprayed with a cleaning solution, the Xinhua news agency said.
